How can international teachers attain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in the UK?
International teachers looking for teaching jobs in the UK may see the acronym QTS in job ads. QTS stands for Qualified Teacher Status, which is awarded to teachers who have completed their training with certified training providers in the UK.
International teachers may be eligible for QTS status, dependent on where they trained and how much teaching experience they have.
Teachers in most provinces in Canada are eleigible for QTS immediately. Contact martin.butcher@teachin.co.uk for more information.
Experienced Australian teachers (with 2 + years teaching experience) are eligible to apply for QTS. It’s easy to apply, and recommended that you do so at this link before you leave Australia.
Newly Qualified Teachers (teaching graduates) from Australia (if they don’t have their full Australian teacher registration and have not been teaching in Australia for 2 years) are not automatically eligible for QTS. However, Australian NQT’s can apply for QTS via the Assessment Only route (at this link. The teacher will have to provide a teaching portfolio & evidence of their teaching).
International candidates still have 4 years to apply for QTS once they arrive into the UK.
Please note that teachers with an Australian, New Zealand or Canadian teaching qualification are still able to work without QTS in the UK.
