Teach in the Home Counties

Village life on the doorstep of London

England’s home counties are the counties that surround London. They are also known as the “commuter belt”, as commuting to work in London is very practical from many home county villages, towns and cities. Many parts of the home counties closest to London have, in fact, been partly subsumed into London, and can be reached on the London public transport network of the tube, overland trains, and buses. Canadian teachers are welcomed into school communities across the home counties.

The home counties are synonymous with relatively affluent, comfortable living conditions, close proximity to picturesque countryside surroundings, well preserved and well kept buildings and public spaces. That said, there are a small number of home county towns that do suffer from relative economic deprivation.

The home counties are an ideal choice of location for teachers moving to the UK who are keen to live in quaint locations where they can escape the noise and pollution of the capital, yet being close enough to London that they can still enjoy all the benefits this fast-paced, exciting, endlessly morphing city has to offer. Public transport is generally good, and teachers in the home counties often can live happily without a car. Teachers who want to take advantage of cheap flights to Europe, North Africa and beyond are well serviced by the home counties – with the exception of London City Airport, all of London’s airports are actually situated in various home counties.
