Teach in Durham
Durham is one of England’s most beautiful Cathedral Cities, set in a scenic bend of the River Wear, just 17 miles from Newcastle (about twenty minutes by train, and the closest airport if traipsing around the Continent on long weekends is your thing). Durham is a 3 hour, 275 mile train ride north-east of London. It boasts small town charm, but the large university ensures it also offers a vibrant night-life, cosmopolitan buzz, and excellent sporting facilities. Being a small city it is easy to get around and retains a strong sense of community. It is surrounded by quaint country towns if you prefer to live a quieter life, all within an easy commute of the city. Being in the north-east of England, Durham is also an incredibly affordable place to live a comfortable lifestyle on a teacher’s salary!
Nature-lovers will delight in walking the nearby Northern Pennines or the Durham Dales, and the beaches east of Durham are quite spectacular, as is the cliffside scenery along the Durham Heritage Coast. Hamsterley Forest is a wonderful place to explore, or you could walk through picturesque woodlands to High Force, the largest waterfall in England. The Durham Riverbank is a relaxing route along which to stroll from café to pub to castle, taking in the breathtaking views (just be sure to rug up warm in the bracing Durham winters!)
Durham is home to some of the UK’s most beautiful castles and a varied assortment of museums and galleries, so history-lovers will feel right at home. The award-wining Beamish Museum transports you back to life in the North of England in the 1800’s, and Raby Castle and Crook Hall & Gardens offer impressive medieval architecture. The iconic, World Heritage listed Durham Castle & Cathedral sit proudly above the city: Durham Cathedral was voted as the UK’s number one landmark in the 2013 Trip Advisor Traveller’s Choice awards.
Durham has fantastic state and private schools, so there are an infinite number of possibilities to find your ideal teaching job!
